Crowd, judges agree on top BBQ at 21st Pork Rib-Off
The sweet, smoky aroma of barbecue welcomed Tuesday's Ohio State Fair-goers as the 21st Annual Pork Rib-Off enjoyed another successful go, crowning the latest round of Ohio cooking champions.
Five officials were on hand for the blind judging of the day's food, including Ohio State Fair General Manager Virgil Strickler, Ohio Expo Commission Chair and Ohio Soybean Council's Steve Reinhard, Representative Brian Hill, Senator Bob Peterson (President Pro Tempore of the Ohio Senate), and Ohio Department of Agriculture Director David Daniels. All noted fine entries from each participating organization.
Red Pig Inn of Ottawa, Ohio was the big winner of the day, taking home the titles of Grand Champion Ribs, Reserve Champion Pulled Pork, and the People's Choice Award.
The hometown restaurant had won the event in the past, though had not entered for 10 years. Steven Wagner accepted the awards on behalf of the Red Pig Inn and said it had been a long day of cooking the pork to perfection, but it was all worth it in the end.… Continue reading

State Fair legends
Quietly whistling to himself, the judge strolled by Mike's steer, giving it a long look. Mike was nervous, but he'd had a good day. He was in the hunt for champion — the last paring down of more than 350 steers. He clutched the halter of his clear favorite, the one he'd had his eye on all year.
Mike's father started a 4-H club with a focus on showing cattle and he and his brothers had done just that from their earliest 4-H days. They were like most 4-H families and there was always the issue of who would get what animal and Mike had spent his show career picking and choosing with his older brothers. This year, though, was different because Mike's brothers were older and off to college. Mike got first and last choice.
The steer he led around the show ring at the command of the whistling judge had come from South Dakota.… Continue reading

Ohio Ag Net Podcast | Episode 20 | State Fair Livestock Legends, Dairy and the 2018 Farm Bill
For the 20th edition of the Ohio Ag Net Podcast, brought to you by AgriGold, Ty Higgins, Joel Penhorwood and Bart Johnson visit about the first case of southern rust detected in Ohio this summer.
As the Ohio State Fair Sale of Champions celebrates 50 years, some of the greatest stories about the sale aren't told nearly as often as they should be. Matt Reese wrote one of those classic stories down and Ty Higgins narrates it.
And much needed changes are possibly coming for the dairy industry in the 2018 Farm Bill. Senator Sherrod Brown talks about some of the adjustments that need to be made to the Margin Protection Program (MPP) in order to make it a viable safety net program.
